Say something like this: “There are many kinds of prayer. In the story, the girl thought of prayer as a way of talking to God. But prayers can also be something yo say to yourself, to help yourself feel better.”

Now show video — which the children may have seen in a worship service last summer — which explains how a prayer can be something that you can say to yourself to help you feel better:

Now help the children try and say these poems aloud. You can recite them one line at a time, and have the children repeat each line back.

The poem that Elephant likes is a poem by Edward Everett Hale, a Unitarian minister, and it goes like this:
I am only one.
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything.
But still I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

You’ll probably want to help the children understand this poem by saying it again, and explaining it as you go. Notice that in the video, Elephant says that this poem makes him feel better. Elephant says the poem helps him to understand that he doesn’t have to do everything — he doesn’t have to fix every problem in the whole world. Instead, he can just do the things that are important for him to do.

The poem the Possum likes is a poem by the Universalist poet Edwin Markham, and it goes like this:
Outwitted
They drew a circle that shut me out —
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took them in.

There are some hard words and concepts in this poem, which you’ll probably have to explain. In the video, Possum says, “Sometimes people try to shut me out. But this reminds me that love is more powerful than trying to shut people out.”
